Ascent Trip ReportTired from our 5300-foot Charleston ascent the previous day, Kerry and I gave up on our initial tentative plan to climb Mummy Mountain today. But it was so hot in Las Vegas that we needed to get up to at least 10000 feet, or spend 3+ hours driving to Utah. We found Fletcher Peak nearby and decided to try it, even though it’s only on the Zdon peak list.
We arrived at a pullout signed for the North Peak Trailhead, already almost full at 8am. The first two miles consisted mostly of moderately steep switchbacks. At a junction we went left on a less maintained trail, down to a saddle, then up 400 steep feet to the false summit, where there is a register and excellent views. A short way past this was the true summit, shaded but without good views. On the way down we took a short detour at our earlier junction to visit the rain tree, a large and ancient bristlecone pine at the first saddle west of the junction.
There were dozens of people out hiking, many of them starting much later than we did, despite the heat. There were even 5 or 6 people going up or down on Fletcher, which feels out of the way compared to the other higher peaks nearby. Our hike was 4 hours and 7 miles with 2500 feet of gain.
