Ascent Trip Report

I totally misjudged this ascent. It is much easier than I realized from trip reports. Perhaps the trails have been improved. Desert Rat has a trip report and GPS track but you do NOT have to start that far back. When you take Mountain Road it is in good shape. A high clearance vehicle or and AWD Subaru will have no problem. The road ends in a parking lot unpaved that holds easily 12 vehicles. We got there on a FRI and there were about 5 cars/trucks. The USGS map shows a starting point of elevation 1010 this is the TH.

In addition, there are multiple trails up the mountain. The track used by Desert Rat is the most common and is well flagged in orange tape and blazes. There is a new loop track below the warden shack loops back that is flagged in multi color tape (like orange and blue?) we did not take it either direction as we did not have time to fool around. It is a steady climb on a large ATV track till the warden shack and then a single file trail the rest of the way that is well maintained and used. We passed about 12 people today.

The top has nice slabs with nice views from the 1k plus prominence. There is a sub-trail to a second peakbagger location that also has nice views signed eagle point. We did not do it due to time constraints. Bottom line. If you park your car with the others at elevation 1010 you have a 4 mile round trip hike with about 1490 feet of total gain

I completed my Maine County Prom Peak list today with county number 16!
