Ascent Trip ReportThe ascent of Mt Zwischen via the south ridge is a long, rolling hike, generally on decent terrain. The trailhead should be accessible by passenger car in dry conditions.
Not far from where we started, at approximately N37.739, W105.454 we intersected a trail. This was a little patchy but generally well-defined all the way up the first climb, to point 10822. It appeared that it has even gotten some horse usage in this section, though not recently - hunters?
Beyond point 10822 the path was often hard to find/often we didn't find it. But staying fairly near the ridge top, except where the attached track shows obvious deviations, was generally the best approach. There was a section of bad blowdown between about the southern point 11195 and the closed contour at 11160+ south of the northern 11195. Neither our up or down route is ideal here - we should have followed an animal track, a little farther east than our northbound track, down to the saddle.
I can't really speak to the route from the north from Medano Pass, but the terrain looked rougher than what we did. We were generally happy with this route.
The mosquitoes were horrendous.
