Ascent Trip Report

Short hike to a spectacular 360-degree view. Carolina Mountain Club rates it "easy" but that doesn't mean flipflops. The path is fairly steep and the footing near the top is uneven. The trail is unblazed but easy to follow. It starts off the parkway at MP354.7 behind the gate to the old Mount Mitchell toll road. Follow the ridge to the summit. Watch out for old barbed wire on the right side on the second half of the trail.

Three other NC 5K peaks can be done the same day from the same trailhead. Graybeard and Rocky Knob are a 5.9-mile round trip, and Bald Knob is an 0.5 mile bushwhack. There is supposedly a manway on the south side of The Pinnacle that would be a shortcut toward Rocky Knob and Graybeard, but I have not explored it.
