Ascent Trip ReportAccess Notes: This is accessible via SR60 in Buena Vista, Virginia. Coming from Interstate 81, from SR60, make a left at Coffeytown Road. Make a left at Wiggins Spring Road. This last mile up to the summit is a very rough road requiring a high clearance four wheel drive vehicle. This road will be treacherous with snow and ice and slippery in the rain – definitely not for the faint of heart. Alternatively, one can proceed from the Mt. Pleasant trail head on Wiggins Spring Road and drive the narrow road all the way to the summit. It might be smart to hike the last mile and park the car at the base at Coffeytown Road when conditions do not warrant a drive-up.
Upon arrival at the summit I found a worker doing maintenance work on the communication equipment and chatted with him for a while and told him about radio amateurs and summit activations.
I set up on the trail using one of the trees to support my mast.
I forest ranger drove up while I was operating and I was fortunately on the side of the trail and not in his way. I asked the forest ranger on the best way to get back to SR60. He said to make a right at the base which is Coffeytown Road.
