Ascent Trip Report
There are several routes to the summit of Standing Indian but the easiest is north bound on the Appalachian Trail from Deep Gap (35.039431,-83.552724). From Deep Gap it is a 2.5 mile uphill hike on the AT. Drive around 14 miles west from Franklin, NC on Hwy 64 and turn left on Deep Gap Road (brown FS sign). At 1.8 miles stay left and drive another 4 miles to Deep Gap.

My son Paul, who is a photographer, accompanied me on this hike. My son wears a size 11 shoe and he was wearing work boots that I had which were 10 ½ which was acceptable on the uphill.
My son Paul on the summit of Standing Indian
There was plenty of room on the summit as there was a large clearing with a view. A short piece of pipe buried on the ground was conveniently placed to hold my mast. Soon I was on the air and making contacts.
I managed to have a couple of S2S’s, one with George KX0R who was on Tremont Mountain W0C/SR-054 and another one with Paul K9PM who was on Rim Road Peak in Arizona W7A/CS-020.
On the downhill hike however, the effect of the undersize boots became more apparent. Our pace slowed as Paul was trying to minimize the pain. As the truck came into view, it was a sight for sore feet for sure. I still planned on hiking up Yellow Mountain which shares the same trail head. I asked Paul to wait for me in the truck as I hike the mile and a quarter up the AT to Yellow Mountain.
