Ascent Trip Report

We added this hike in last minute to our return route from Rhode Island. We parked on Mountain Road by many other cars at the Mountain House Trail trailhead. The trail was considerably wide all the way up, but had many loose rocks that teeter-tottered unexpectedly. Some that were several square feet moved. The temperature was relatively pleasant when we started, but we kept a hot pace going up and got hot because of it. After crossing the road, we made it to the summit parking lot and we stayed on the rocky trail to the top, avoiding the switchbacking sidewalk. There were dozens of people at the top, most of them on the observation deck at the bottom of the fire tower. One man was even operating a hand held ham radio. We had heard the other day that when it is clear enough that you can see the skyscrapers in Boston and Mt. Greylock on the western border of Massachusetts. Indeed we could. It was an incredible view. We went back the way we came at about the same pace.
