Ascent Trip ReportI was heading east to hike Squam Ridge TRail (highly recommended) on the 5th and decided to camp out the night before on the route. Stinson fit the requirement and I had a feeling it would be quiet on the 4th. Of course Stinson Lake was in full throttle it being a hot 4th of July. I made the mistake of driving around the Lake but eventually got to Doetown Road. MY thought was to pick a nice spot off trail set up camp and then climb to the summit. It was an easy hike so I decided to carry all my gear up and camp on the summit. I know this is discouraged but there is a grassy flat spot right next to the foundations. Not a sensitive area and no harm done.
THe view from the summit is to the south/south east. On a clear day (it was hot and hazy) it might be more impressive - maybe some views of the Lake Region and beyond? On this night the view shed was more limited and featured 10-12 wind turbines turning lazily or not at all. Nevertheless it was a wonderful night of solitude lulled by the song of a wood thrush and enjoying a starry sky. |
