Ascent Trip ReportA long but most beautiful approach up Little Giant Pass and through the Napeeqa Valley. The first river crossing at Chiwawa River was pretty easy and manageable. The hike up to Little Giant Pass is pretty much a standard hike. Going down to the valley got brushy and muddy at certain points, but was still pretty straight forward. The original plan was to camp at Butterfly Butte, but we started a bit too late, we waited for the following morning to cross the Lewis Creek stream and Napeequa River. From camp, getting to the base of the Pilz Glacier was shwacky and required route finding, but nothing too bad. The glacier climb was straightforward with only a few but small opening crevasses. From the saddle point at the top of the glacier, you could traverse to hit the summit or you could drop down and go up a ridge to hit the summit. Both ways to the summit require some class 2-3-4 moves. Total stats for the trip came at around 30 miles and 13,000' gain. |
