Ascent Trip Reporti drove up to the 4x4 trailhead, gmaps navigated the whole way just fine. after you leave FR-058, it definitely is a rough road, all-terrain tires are a must for all the rocks. it being the fourth of july long weekend there were many people out on the roads, much dust on the main roads, and many OHV going both directions on the narrow 4x4 road. on the way down, right after i thought "damn i really hope i don't have to reverse up that last segment, too many rocks to do it in reverse" sure enough, a pair of OHVs were coming uphill. i felt sheepish getting out asking them to go downhill because of my inability to reverse up the rocks behind me. it was either that or one of them would have had to spot me, and the lead car looked like they weren't really out for even a short bit of uphill exercise.
i followed ken jones' GPX up, and on the way down i just went south along the open ridge to stay in the breeze, and away from the mosquitos. quite an enjoyable short hike.
broken glass jar is all that remains of likely register.
i sat on the summit, eating lunch, staring off into the distance at grand teton. it stands so sharp and tall above all the other merely 10k' peaks around it.
oh btw the russel creek trailhead for red ridge is along the same road, much further down closer to the highway. it wouldn't be difficult to combine the two... unless you happened to sleep in, and were sore from a steep hike the day before.
