Ascent Trip Report

351. CoHP - ALLEGAN COUNTY, MICHIGAN
1000+ ft.

I could not contain the bug. In a couple of weeks, I would be traveling to the Upper Peninsula for the MI 2019 Konvention. I decided to use today for a day trip to see what I could accomplish in the lower part of the state. I set my sights on five counties I thought had reasonable chance of success; I was rewarded with those five plus another bonus county.

First on the list was Allegan County, the closest of the five original targets. I followed the always-good Bob Schwab trip report with one minor exception. I set my car’s GPS to drive me to the HP area, and it took me to a different spot. Well different is not quite correct. Allow me to explain.

Usually my car GPS is reliable. It takes me to the closest road point near the high point. But sometimes the closest point is not the best place for a trail head. Today is an example. My GPS took me to Golfview Boulevard, then to Deer Run Boulevard, and finally to Eagle Green Court. The last was a street that is north of the HP and north of the golf course mentioned by Schwab. I could approach the HP from here, but I did not like the idea of parking on a community cul de sac and walking through residents’ back yards to cross the golf course. I decided to return to the Schwab TH near the water tower.

Driving along Golfview Boulevard, I came to the double power lines. The water tower would be east across the HP field. There was a 2-track that went east from here through tall grass, and I could see that it went a long way. I decided to turn onto the 2-track and see where it would get me.

I followed the 2-track down and then up and over a high contour. I was able to continue all the way to a point that was just short of the target farm field. I could see the water tower across the field, and I believed I was just as close from here as from there. I decided to get out.

The fields were planted with soybeans, not too old. They were just shoe high. I hiked east past the first tower to gain a north-south ridge. I looked to the north where I felt the high ground was near a woods. But I also noted some high ground just east of the first tower, under the power lines. I visited both areas. In about 10 minutes, I was back at the car, and Allegan County was done.
