Ascent Trip ReportOutlook Mt/Esther/Whiteface. Traverse from the Atmospheric Sciences Research Center Field Station...Marble Mountain & Wilmington Trail up) .... then the Whiteface Landing/Connery Pond Trail down. First part of trail up seemed steepest and most arduous. Passed two old ski sled huts (I think that's what they were). Stopped at an overlook near Marble Mountain. Up to Overlook Mountain, which I'm thinking from reading that it's either the ski area or the point near Esther). In any event, hit both spots. Up to Esther, the turn has a big cairn and a small sign. It says it's not maintained or marked but very easy to follow in the summer. Hit the summit (big rectangular summit marker). Down to the junction and up to Whiteface. Hit the junction at Veteran's Highway. The highway wall stonework is impressive. Back into the woods, beautiful approach to the summit with the ASRC Whiteface Mountain Field Station in constant view, trail lined with mountain laurel. Busy summit with a few familiar hikers seen along the way; many drive-uppers. The trail down via Whiteface Landing/Connery pond was more challenging with huge boulders and cairns to follow for about a mile or so. Led to the landing, featuring a dock accessing Lake Placid, then to a nice camping area with a lean to. A bit further is one view of Connery Pond but not the greatest view. At the end is Connery Pond, is the Connery Pond access trail (very short)...the one you're looking for...big wide view of the Whiteface area. You can also drive to this from Connery Pond road.
