Ascent Trip Report

I did this as part of a family walk that took in most of the National Arboretum grounds.

DC is not the best peakbagging destination, but at least its high point and prominence point are on parkland. The National Arboretum is worth a trip even if it weren't home to Mount Hamilton, the prominence point. There are many ways to walk to the top. I recommend walking up through the azalea gardens in May if you can make that work. The highest point is in the middle of the roundabout at the end of the park maintenance road, right around a lone tree. The rise of Mount Hamilton compared to the relatively flat ground surrounding is best appreciated from the open meadows near the old Capitol columns.

While you're on the grounds, I highly recommend the conifer collection and the Asian gardens. Gates open at 8AM every day except for a handful of holidays and entrance is free. The only problem you might have is that sometimes the area around the azalea gardens and Mount Hamilton is closed when the resident bald eagles display mating behaviors. Check their website before you go.
