Ascent Trip ReportWe stayed at Little Kalulu Lodge near Sossusvlei in Namibia. What a nice place. The night before our early morning trip to the dunes we slept in our sky bed atop our cottage and watched the night sky of Namibia. My GPS watch decided to switch time zones during the night and we ended up getting up late, alerted by our guide Obie that we were late for breakfast. We rushed to get dressed, headed off for a very quick breakfast and managed to be ready to leave on time. The red sands of the Sossusvlei Dunes look their best shortly after sunrise. We saw some hot air ballooners on our drive out to the dunes. We stopped for pictures at Dune 45 and saw some hikers on its slopes. But we were eager to tackle Big Daddy. It is the biggest dune in the area with a vertical climb of 300m +. For the most part we followed the winding crest of the dune to its summit. We celebrated with some photos and were met at the top by Obie. We then took the fast route down the side of the dune to Deadvlei a white clay pan with the remains of several hundred year dead camel thorn trees. The trees flourished there when the climate was a bit wetter. It was an awesome excursion. |
