Ascent Trip Report

This was a fun hike with my cute daughter. We drove from Vegas and took the Cold Creek turnoff. The road turns to gravel just after passing through the small, quaint town. The gravel got pretty bumpy about 1 mile into it so we parked and traipsed up to the parking lot where the trail head is located. The beginning section of the trail is quite scenic as it winds towards the base of the mountain. We noticed how nice this part of the trail was on the descent. Shortly into the hike, the trail hits the hillside and starts to switchback up. Others have commented on the crazy number of switchbacks that eventually lead up to a saddle and these switchbacks do continue and continue. Some are long, some short, some are breath stealers, some easy. They all lead up and collectively and generally in a gradual procession with some really nice views at sections. For the most part, we were able to maintain a decent pace to the saddle area. The saddle is grand and relaxing and generous with its views, especially of the backside of the Spring Mountains and the Pahrump area. From the saddle the trail heads toward the peak area which is actually in view for alot of the latter part of the hike. It looks like a big mound of trees. There are more switchbacks on the way to the peak and even though this saddle to peak run is only about 1 mile, it seemed long. Eventually, we reached the 2 sets of cairns that signal the turnoff to the actual peak. We took the 2nd cairn and followed the bits and pieces of a faint use trail angling up to find the top. The peak area is small and there are some trees, but it still provides a refreshing mountain experience. When descending from the peak on the spur trail, we almost overshot the trail, but we looked for the 2 cairns and got back on path. The switchbacks carried us back down the mountain. My daughter and I really enjoyed this one.
