Ascent of Blanca Peak on 2018-07-24
|Date:||Tuesday, July 24, 2018|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||14345 ft / 4372 m|
Ascent Trip ReportWe were able to drive up to about 9800ft in a Toyota Tundra, which took a few hours but spared us the climb in the heat of the lower slopes. We then backpacked to Lake Como and found a good place to camp. We almost had the lake to ourselves, but were joined by one group and one solo hiker. The hike up to the lake from where we parked was about 5 miles with roughly 2000 ft of elevation gain. The next morning we hiked up trail past the lakes to the trail split for Ellingwood point. We were unable to find a well defined trail up to E-point so we made a route up to the ridge across the talus using images from 14ers.com. After some class 2+ scrambling we reached the summit and enjoyed the fantastic views of little bear peak and the chain of lakes. My two climbing companions elected to hike back to camp while I continued up to Blanca. While the route finding it much easier up Blanca, I found myself using my hands to climb up certain sections to reach the summit. I only enjoyed the summit for a short time as I could see storms moving in from the valley. Keep note of conditions constantly as it is difficult to get a 360 view of your surroundings and thus difficult to detect an incoming storm. We camped one more night at Lake Como and elected to skip Little bear the next day as the weather was not good.
