Ascent Trip ReportA private driveway walk to a huge house right on the summit ... 400 yds RT.
See Tom Layton's TR for a good informative read.
From Hwy #321 I drove up Pinnacle Avenue a very short distance to a JCT with Cliff Drive on the right (signed private). I checked out Cliff Drive which dead-ends at a house (there was no one home). The whole north side of Cliff Drive is a cliff, not too inviting being that this private so I looked elsewhere. There is a very small parking spot at the JCT Pinnacle/Cliff. I parked here and walked up Pinnacle 150 yds and found a small head path on the right (just before its crest and about 15yds before house #299 on the left). The whole mountain slope is rhododendrons so I fought my way up the slope (south) 40 yds to a fence line. I could see a driveway ahead and the roof of a house beyond so I backtracked to Pinnacle and continued on Pinnacle another 150 yds to driveway #344 on the right (with an open gate and a sign "Silver Stone"). The driveway was partly moss covered and didn't appear to be recently used. There is a tight parking spot on the other side of the road.
I walked up the driveway (200 yds) to a huge stone house sitting right on the summit - no one answered the door and little evidence of life, although an outside light over the door was on. I walked around, giving a shout-out as I made my way to the rear - a gorgeous view to the southwest.
I believe this is the only safe way to access this HP - walk up or drive up.
While here took the time to visit Blowing Rock - a very touristy place with a 6$ entry fee. BM "BLOWING ROCK #3, 1933". A superb observation platform with a panorama to the southwest, similar to the house at the triple divide HP - Mitchell in the distance.
