Ascent Trip ReportOur starting point was via a very rough road, where high clearance was necessary and I used 4WD.
Reports on summitpost indicate that the road to Zenobia Peak, which used to be driveable to the summit, is now closed by a private landowner along the route. This is correct - the road is posted against trespass and gated just west of our parking spot.
Our hiking route used a land ownership overlay on the map (in the peakbagger app)to stay on public lands. There is some brush to pick your way through, and we collected a number of ticks along the way. The attached track when plotted on the overlaid map suggests that we might have strayed onto private lands very slightly a couple of times - we can only state that we stayed north of the fence in those areas.
This route requires map skills and the ability to travel cross-country, but it is still possible to access Zenobia Peak via a public route. I discussed this route with a BLM specialist before trying it, and he confirmed that it was okay.
As of the time of our visit, the lookout was staffed by a friendly guy who's been up there for over 15 summers. |
