I have driven US 27 countless times between Fort Wayne and Portland, IN, so I had passed near this HP many times in my life. I would be doing it again in just two days on Easter Sunday as we traveled to an afternoon family gathering.
From the first parking site, I hiked ENE into the field to a high spot toward the silos. Then I hiked SE toward the woods and another high elevation. This is probably the HP of the small contour area shown on the topo maps. From this location, I could see the Muhlenkamp farm that appeared to be on a higher elevation. I completed the short 0.3mi loop back to my car and drove off to visit the other county high contour.
As you travel east on CR 1100S, you will travel up a noticeable rise that can be seen from far away. I pulled into the driveway at the crest of this rise, and I noticed a farmer driving his tractor back toward the barn. I walked over and introduced myself to Gary Muhlenkamp, the homeowner. I found Gary to be very personable, and he gave me a sort history of the site. He was aware that his land is the county HP. Gary has lived at this site for about 30 years now, and he appeared to be about 50 years old. He walked me over to a high spot just west of the house where a tree had previously grown. This was the highest spot based on my quick scan of the area surrounding the home. Gary asked if I wanted to meet his wife. I appreciated the offer but declined since I had some other travels to complete. He invited me back anytime.
