Ascent Trip Report

Karen took a Yoga class in Carbondale and Willie and I needed a quick run up a new peakbagging destination. We found this off the main road. It is a very popular hike/run/walk/bike place in Carbondale. Parking was full. We found that they made a new trail called "Ruthies Run" which was ONLY for hikers and it was not a gradual track for bikes or a long slog along a maintenance road but a very well built zig zag up through he red sedimentary rock with nice rock steps placed in the side of the ridge. Very steep but well laid out. Dogs allowed OFF LEASH. Far too many dogs off leash with bad temperaments. I keep Willie leashed most of the time. Surprised how many owners have dogs with nasty dispositions to other dogs but they let them go ahead and snarl at other's dogs? Despite that the beautiful red clays and sands along the rock against the very green foliage form the record rains and nice views of the river made this a nice hike. It is through pinon pine and juniper with surprisingly many nice open vistas especially of Mount Soporis which has unseasonable amount of snow this year and is beautiful. Most go back when the snow is not so deep! I actually found this to a very nice pleasing hike - I will rate a 6. At the top there are two small contours and who knows which is actually the top? So I bushwhacked over to the second one to be sure I got the right one.
