Ascent Trip Report

Sierra Club trip led by Lisa Miyake and me with 7 participants. Rock Creek Road closed at Pack Station added 1.4mi, 300' one way to get to Mosquito Flat trailhead. Total 5 miles, 1400' gain, to Treasure Lakes campsite. Hand carried snowshoes about 1.7mi because my pack had so much stuff in and on it that they wouldn't fit. Then there was full coverage. The snow was melting pretty fast. No open water above about 10,500 (Long Lake area) so we had to melt snow for water. Point avalanches occurred on Sat and especially on Sun, with one slab avalanche observed by some from our party, to the right of the hourglass couloir (when facing it from the bottom). Intermittent hot sun with snow reflection (=sunburn) and snowing. It was snowing when setting up tents and taking them down. Left camp at 5:25am (planned 5am but some participants new to snow climbing weren't prepared). Carried snowshoes on packs to base of couloir for the trip back to camp. Initially we weren't breaking through, but within an hour we were, mostly ankle to mid-calf, but occasionally to knee. Slow going. Two young guys from SF and San Jose joined us and the 11 of us worked well as a team to make it to the summit. The whole way was mostly covered by snow, but some rocks exposed above the couloir. It started snowing while we were on the summit so we didn't linger. Got to glissade down part of the way from the summit and most of the way down the hourglass (it was soft, so slow). Postholed to snowshoes, put them on, then back to camp, packed up, packed out. Intermittent snow and sun continued, but mostly snow on Sun.
