Ascent Trip Report2018-10-22
Dayhike with David Salinger, from hairpin to Kangaroo Pass and up the ridge. No snow. Dry ascent. Fun ridge scramble, finishes with a dirty gully on steep terrain. Best footing is on ascender's left of upper basin/gully to summit (good for ascent and descent of this upper, rotten section). On 2018-10-18 climbed Wildcat Mtn; 2018-10-19 climbed Devil's Peak; 2018-10-22 climbed Wallaby. Saw no one on all four climbs. HOT, sunny weather. Inversion. Dusting of snow clinging to north faces. Larches done. Big fires burning at the end of the Twisp River Road, spilling smoke into the Methow Valley. Fabulous weekend.
NOTE: 4 PEAK TRIP: WILDCAT, DEVILS, SHERMAN, WALLABY. On 2018-10-18 we climbed Wildcat Mountain from Slate Peak Lookout parking lot with David Salinger. Took trail 498, to 478, to 474 and climbed the south ridge of Wildcat. Descended the west ridge to the saddle and descended the west face down a scree gully to trail 474A, then went southerly on 474A to trails 474, 478, and 498, and back to our camper van at Slate Peak Lookout parking lot. Had dinner outside, while watching a beautiful, brilliant red sunset. Stayed the night and camped. Hunters arrived in early AM, but only to take a look around. We climbed Devil's Peak on 10-19, again from Slate Peak Lookout parking lot. We camped a second night there, this time a mountain biking family (Transition Bikes from Bellingham) camped at Slate Peak too. We planned on climbing Sunrise and McLeod on Saturday, but Dave's foot went lame on Friday night, with no explanation (he got a contusion on his right calf from a boulder that rolled over on him...but why his ankle?). So, to figure out if his foot was good to go, we spent Saturday enjoying the colors and views of the Pasayten Wilderness and Methow Valley, got food and gas, and went to my sister's house in Winthrop, where we parked our van in her driveway and camped out. Dave's ankle/foot miraculously improved. On Sunday, 10-21, we climbed Sherman Peak from Sweetgrass Butte via Burgett Peak and Isabella Ridge (there was a massive fire in the McLeod basin). We camped at Early Winters on Sunday night, and climbed Wallaby on Monday, 10-22, then drove home. The trip was fabulous due to unseasonably HOT weather (frosty and cool in the shadows). There was an inversion. A dusting of snow lingered on north faces. Fabulous weekend.
