Ascent Trip Report

A trail/whack eastbound ..... 2.3 miles, 700' gain, 1:30 hours RT.

This Peak, in the Moreau Lake State Park has its shortest access from the TH on Spier Falls Road (43.22087,-73.73542, elev 470') on the south side of the Hudson River. The TH is a gated service road that runs along the P-L-R-O-W. There is a hidden parking area to the left of the gate. This TH is 1 mile west of the Spier Falls Dam or half a mile east of the JCT Spier Falls/Folts Roads.
This TH is the start of the Western Ridge Trail (yellow blazed), the Peak's summit is to the east of this TH. All hiking distances and elevations that I provide are estimates only.

I hiked the yellow blazed trail southerly a short distance to where it bends left (east) and at .1 mile came to a Trail JCT B. I continued straight as the trail climbs/winds easterly .6 miles (on route crossing a P-L-R-O-W) to a second Trail JCT S13 (43.22193,-73.75766, elev 960'), yellow trail stays left, I turned right on the Eastern Ridge Trail (blue blazed) and in .25 miles arrived at a height-of-land with a 4-Way Trail JCT S9 (43.22269,-73.75349, elev 1100').
I left the JCT and bushwhacked a left-of-north line (nice open deciduous woods ridge) 250 yds to the obvious summit (43.22404,-73.75465, elev 1158'). I added a rock cairn.

This is a wooded summit, but where is the "OVERLOOK" ???? so I looked around for one with no results. I even walked the ridge northerly .1 mile and came to the yellow trail. This part of the ridge has a nice grass/park-like floor.

I descended westbound on the yellow trail .35 miles to the JCT S13 (on-route passing a nice lookout of the Hudson River), then backtracked to the TH.

Once back to the TH I decided to take in bigger hike in the Moreau Lake State Park, so we drove east on Spier Falls Road for 3 miles to the crest of the road with a "LOW GEAR" sign, the TH Parking is on the right. There is a posted large trail map showing the huge network of trails in the park.

I should note that there are no signs on Spier Falls Road announcing these two STATE PARK TRAILHEAD - very unusual.

I did a clockwise loop over 3 peaks (MOREAU OVERLOOK, GRANT MOUNTAIN and RIDGE CAP OUTLOOK) following Jean Andre Laverdure's GPS track in his Ridge Cap Overlook TR of July 2015. Overall the 6.5 miles clockwise loop is moderate with the most interesting/challenging section being the descending Western Ridge Trail (yellow blazed) from Ridge Cap Outlook - a number of rocky stretches with a number of nice lookouts on-route. The ascending route offers no views except for the Moreau Overlook.
The 6.5 mile loop with all the stops took me 3:40 hours. I met up and chatted with 2 hikers on-route.
