Ascent Trip Report

My friend Will and I left from the trailhead a little before 7 am, and reached the shoulder where we left the trail a little after nine. The trail was good and the weather was mild but getting warm. We dropped into Bowl #1, quickly descending a couple hundred feet along a game trail until we reached a small creek, where we first saw snow. We ascended moderate snow slopes through forest, following the creek up the bowl to a saddle, leading into Bowl #2. We descended more steeply, on snow and mild talus, until the bowl flattened out, then climbed to the ridge. Mosquitoes through this entire section were thick and aggressive.

Following the ridge to the base of Dirtyface Benchmark, we eyed a traverse to the left, but opted to go up and over. The up was easy enough, but the over involved some fairly spicy scrambling with exposure, and the line down was very tricky to find. We finally made it over, and scrambled the ridge to the face of Dirtyface Peak. We went straight up and slightly right, through scrambling that was mostly easy, with just a couple challenging/moderately exposed spots.

On the descent, we opted to try the traverse, being daunted by the prospect of reversing our previous track. It turned out to be incredibly mellow, and I strongly recommend it to anyone approaching by this route. The rest was simply retracing our GPS track. We arrived back at the car just before 6 pm.

Overall, a challenging climb, but not overwhelming. The bugs were by far the most frustrating aspect.
