Ascent Trip ReportTook Becker's Hollow to the Fire Tower. Third trip up and as promised, this is steeper and tougher than Devil's Path and Spruceton. One bridge and a few small brooks to cross. A couple spots where you might need to use a hand depending on your height. The 3500' sign is on the right of two trees that looks like they were put there just for that purpose (like an entryway). You can turn around and see a view of Thomas Cole, Black Dome and Blackhead. When you come to a clearing with concrete, you are at the site of the original tower (two metal posts and "Bruce" in the concrete) there is a choice of going .35 mi (right) on the yellow trail to the tower or .6 (left) on the blue trail. Stay on blue for Becker's. There is a geocache nearby. Two summit stewards were on site (John and Ralph) and numerous hikers. Fantastic views from the tower. Decided to go to Colonel's Chair after, not knowing what to expect or what it even was and what a treat. Went down Spruceton trail for about 2 miles then turned left onto Colonel's Chair trail. Was pretty straightforward but a steep down until about the register box (metal with a real key), then there was a handmade sign for a summit loop or choice of "lift" (big yellow arrow circle). Unsure of where to go, I started on the summit loop, then turned back to the yellow arrow. Tried looking on the internet about summit loop, couldn't find anything. There are posts with numbers in the woods, unsure about that. Just kept going and found square orange Trail 3 signs saying "to lift". Definitely worth the confusion to emerge along a path to the Hunter ski area. There's Rip Van Winkle statue, views galore, the ski lift running, a building (sorry, I'm not a skier, guess it's a "lodge"?). You can see numerous Catskill high peaks. Spent way too much time looking around and trying to find the "Chair". Later I looked online and did see a big chair, maybe it's seasonal or for special events? So, headed back to the tower. All uphill and steep. Visited the tower again and John the summit steward came out. Again, spent way too much time going back up the tower and getting some dawn photos. Headed back down Becker's Hollow, winding up back at the trailhead in the dark (only to find my vehicle with blown out headlights.) What an adventure.
