Ascent Trip Report

Didn't want to be indoors on such a beautiful day so I decided to solo Crane Mountain. Everyone keeps posting about what a great hike it is on the Facebook pages and I wanted to see what the hype was about. Got to the mountain around 11:30am. The road in is a bit dodgy but my little car handled it like a champ. It is a one lane road for the last quarter mile or so and I'm glad I didn't run into anyone coming the other way. The trailhead has parking for more than a dozen cars and there were already quite a few parked. As soon as I parked the black flies swarmed. I took the red trail with the plan of doing the loop. I felt that the climb started pretty much right away. Within a few minutes I was already off the trail. Luckily I realized it pretty much right away and was able to backtrack and find the markers again. This is a very rocky trail and I spent a lot of the first half mile bear-crawling up the trail on hands and knees. I love this stuff! When I got to the split I decided to do the pond first. It felt mostly downhill to the pond and it was still pretty wet. I was able to rock hop for the most part but I still had wet boots by the time I got to the pond. It's a nice secluded place with a few rocks to sun yourself on if you choose.

Continued on the red trail towards the summit. I stopped just short of the summit to have lunch on an outcropping that was to the right of the trail. This spot had some lovely views to the east and I was the only one there for the entirety of my lunch. Eventually got to the summit in 1hr17min, took a summit selfie, and then headed back down the other side of the trail. On the descent there were two ladders. The first one was a long one and I took my usual slow pace to get down it. The next was only a few rungs and wasn't intimidating at all.

After that it was easy-going. Got back to the junction and down the trail in no time (50min for descent).

This was an enjoyable hike for me.
