Ascent Trip Report

Small(er) peak between Bullhead Mountain and Walker Knob just off the BRP.

This was the first summit of the day for on another adventure in the Black Mountains. I arrived at the trailhead just a dawn was breaking. The forecast called for partly sunny and warm conditions, but just like everything else in this part of NC, you have to learn not to pay attention to the weather folks and be ready for any atmospheric situation. Right before I exited the car, a windy, wet and cold rain shower emerged from the Cane River Valley to the west. Having driven 2.5 hours, I was a bit dispirited. Nevertheless, I through on a sweater and raincoat and decided to make it happen.

DIRECTIONS: From Glassmine Overlook, follow the MST south towards the wooded but not overgrown summit. Highest ground is 30 yards off trail to the east. The MST here was pleasant and not overly steep. On the way back to the car, I finally saw a break in the clouds. Better weather ahead.

Good peak to bag if you are travelling in the Great Craggies as well.
