Ascent Trip ReportNeeding some exercise after our near drive-up of Roof Butte, we decided to go up Elden Mountain, a popular peak in the Flagstaff city limits. A sign near the trailhead declared that the top is closed due to helicopter logging, retrieving dead trees from the devastating Radio Fire in 1977. When we reached the summit area after 2400 feet of gain, we encountered yellow tape across the trail and a sign showing the closure area. There was no logging activity on this Sunday afternoon, and in fact a red car suggested that the lookout was probably on duty. We ran over to touch the highest rock under the tower, and I found the nearby benchmark.
Heads up that the summit will clearly be inaccessible at certain times in the near future.
