Ascent Trip Report

Started out being the only person on the trail, doing hike #4 of the Lake Placid 9er. It was fairly flat and easy going for awhile. Then it got steeper with some wet rock slides. At this point, I met a nice couple, Alison and Rich. Alison was on her 9th hike of the LP 9er. They joined me for the remainder of the hike, for which I was fortunate, as more wet slides were in store, a false summit, then THE CHIMNEY! A super narrow rock "staircase" to scramble up. I was wearing my new 53 liter pack to acclimate to it and thought about taking it off, but managed to squeeze through. You'll want to stash your poles before going up this; I didn't and wish I had. Then there's the zig zag going up the steep, sometimes 4 point contact path to the summit. The markers become rare and the guessing game began. There are some cairns to help. (After, I read there are some faded paint marks, but I didn't see any). More zig zagging and we reached the summit. Found two reference geomarkers but not the summit marker. Amazing views of numerous mountains including Whiteface clearly seen. Walked a bit down to see more views. Headed back down cautiously. A couple with an infant in a front pack were heading up. We gave some advice about what to expect and sort of hinted it wasn't the best trail when carrying a child. An excellent hike with varied terrain and a big payoff at the summit.
