Ascent Trip Report

Part of a multi day hiking with the HPS during the Spring Fling. Camped overnights at the Keller Ski Hut.

Day 2: Grays Peak; Craft Peak

Grays Peak: The meet time was later than desired (9am). The normal TH was closed due to bald eagle nesting. So took alternate which I liked better (distance and views). The alternate TH was just more than a mile up the service road at the closed gate for Butler LO. The group today was much smaller than Day 1 at 12. Started up the service road; there were lots of downed trees some across the road which will require significant effort to remove (we could walk under almost standing up). We then skirted the closure area via a trail. There was some winter flash flooding damage to the road. We then took the direct route up to intercept the main trail. This took some route finding and patience. Took a break once we reached the main trail. great views from this point. The main trail was in great shape most of the way. There was one small section in a meadow that had a couple downed trees and mud to get around. The trail winds around the peak as it reaches the summit. There were more downed trees to get around. Some boulders to easily scramble for the HP. Signed the register. Got a group photo. Then went to a lower viewpoint for some more great photos. We returned the same route. Had lunch back at the vehicles.
