Ascent Trip Report

The drive through the redwoods of Humboldt Redwoods State Park on the way to the trailhead is quite remarkable, winding it way between the huge trees.

From the turnout at the crest of Mattole Road it is 3.2 miles north along Fox Camp Road in the State Park. Notwithstanding the ominous signs places by the local lumber company the route is clearly shown on the State Park Map. The 2019 Road and Trail Management Plan even proposes adding a backpackers camp half way along the road to increase back-country accessibility.

At the turnoff to Big Hill, however, the route to Rainbow Ridge diverges left and leaves state land. The rest of the route is fairly tedious, all on roads, save the last ascent to the northern summit of the Ridge
