Day 2 of two day trip to Mt Palmer and Grapevine Pk. High Clearance 2WD vehicles were able to drive all the way in to the start of the "bad road" described in the DPS Peak Guide and that we referred to as the 2WD parking spot, and which is where we set up camp Saturday night. Several non-high clearance vehicles in our party had us camping out Friday night (before climbing Palmer on Sat) at a couple of spots along the road before getting to the 2WD parking spot; we just consolidated everyone into the available high clearance vehicles Sat morning for the final drive in to the 2WD parking spot. There was only one spot along the "bad road" where 4WD would have been mandatory, but since we didn't have enough 4WD vehicles to drive up over that road, we didn't even try it, we just started hiking from the 2WD parking spot.
From the saddle at the top of the 4WD road, we headed north to follow an obvious route that ascended a N-S trending ridge to where it bended to the west. We generally followed the crest of the ridge as it bent north again and dropped down a hundred feet or so to a saddle. Here the ridge bends west again; we climbed along the crest of the west trending ridge so we could summit Orange Rock Peak and continued along that crest (complete with a few little up-and-down bumps) to the top of Grapevine View Peak, and finally on to the summit of Grapevine Peak. On our return we stayed a bit lower to avoid the up-and-down along the ridge crest as we passed below Orange Rock Pk, and then once we got back onto the northernmost of the N-S trending ridges we walked out to its western edge to summit Return Peak.
Specs for the day: 7.0 miles, 2,700' of gain, about 6 hours
