Ascent Trip ReportSadly, they really don't want you to scramble up to the highest rocks here. If you go up to the main complex parking, and then hike or drive back to the turn-off for the Mayall Telescope, then there is lot of negative signage. The Mayall Telescope was under construction, no tours were being given, and the area was closed to the public.
However, if you come up the main road and make the very acute right turn on the Mayall Road, you really never see the negative signs, due to the way they face. Plausible deniability! You can then drive to the turnout after the road cut (see Ken Jones's report) and park, but there a sign clearly indicates that the "ladder trail" to the summit rocks is also closed.
So I parked and scrambled to the top using a parallel route, avoiding the lower part of the short official path. I touched the highest rocks, took a few photos, and hustled down the ladder path back to my car (away less than 5 minutes) and returned quickly to the main parking lot. The summit bagged, I relaxed and even took one of official tours of the Solar Telescope from the visitor center/museum complex.
I was there early on a Sunday morning, which, right now, might be a good time to avoid construction workers at the Mayall Telescope, but I really don't know for sure.
