Ascent Trip Report(Continued from HIGH TOR)
This portion of the trip is covered by page 42 in Section 4 of "The Long Path Guide, 5th Edition" (LPG).
At this point, there was no choice but to scale over South Mountain and descend to our waiting car. Within two seconds of entering South Mountain County Park on the western side of Central Highway we were reminded of the danger of Lyme disease-carrying ticks in the area, much to the chagrin of some of the group. That said, at least we were reminded by a detailed sign of what must have been at least 100,000x magnified tick and not a real one.
The remaining portion of the hike was a constant exercise in convincing ourselves that "this was the last climb!" However, after three such "last climbs", we made it to the real last climb to the top of South Mountain, unwilling to stick around. Descending back down off the peak we came to some beautiful overlooks finally returning to NY-45 and the Mount Ivy Commuter Parking Lot.
