Ascent Trip ReportFrom Wanlockhead which claims to be Scotland's highest village, the centre of past mining activities and the terminus of a narrow gauge railway.
The Southern Uplands Way is followed in a southerly direction past some white houses and along a grassy path that skirts Stake Hill. The path drops as it crosses Mossy Burn and then ascends again until it reaches a road that services the air traffic control paraphernalia on three of the summits ahead.
I chose to tackle East Mount Lowther first. A path leaves the road to the right after only 250 metres and flanks the hillside ahead towards some telegraph poles. This used to be a significant path between Dumfries and the north. The col between East Mount Lowther and Lowther Hill is reached and the fence line up to the former's summit is followed. There is a view finder there.
The summit is also free of masts and has a bit more of a wilder feel.
Returned to the col and up a grassy path towards a mast where the road is met again. You can follow the road or take the short cuts missing the zig zags. The radar station on Lowther Hill is in a golf ball shaped structure. There is a large level area, partly grass and partly stone/rubble. Take your pick as to the true high point.
The route to the high point of the Lowther Hills, Green Lowther, follows the service road for 1.5km down a shallow dip over Green Trough down a further dip and up to Green Lowther where there is a trig point to mark the top. If you turn your back to the three substantial masts and associated buildings, there is a rather nice view.
Back the same way missing out East Mount Lowther. |
