Ascent Trip Report

Started out at Breakneck trailhead. I soon discovered that there was a marathon/half marathon going on through the mountains. So it was busy, but exciting. Lots of runner/hikers were going up Breakneck. The rocky scrambles were muddy and wet. I heard bagpipes playing, which was curious, but was told, yes, there was a bagpiper playing at the first overlook. A cheer person with a dog was about halfway up that first section. I yielded to the marathoners, so it took longer. Was quite surprised at the number of huge scramble sections. They just kept appearing, maybe 4 of them until reaching the "summit". Using hands and feet a good part of the way. I thought ahead to bring gloves with grip. Gorgeous views of the Hudson River, Storm King Mountain, Pollepel Island and Bannerman Castle. Took Breakneck Bypass Loop to Sugarloaf, where the view of Pollepel/Bannerman was even more fabulous. The trail is easier but does have a scramble section right before the summit. The old, twisty trees at Sugarloaf are very "photogenic" and artistic. There are no signs to Sugarloaf. Take the red Breakneck bypass to yellow trail. Or there is a longer loop.
