Ascent Trip ReportThe first time I climbed this I didn't know where the normal trail to the summit was. I just followed Shoemaker Road to the end looking for a trail. I finally found one after the road ended but it wasn't clear and was very overgrown, difficult to hike and follow, going up the steep ridge. When I got to the summit and read all the notes I couldn't imagine that everyone took the same route I did. However I didn't see any other option so I returned the same way I went up. Later I discovered that there is indeed another trail but didn't make a note of where it is. In case anyone else doesn't know, it is just before the distance marker 3.39.
A couple of days ago I decided kind of at the last minute to go up and hike the Bear Creek Trail from the West Fork but that was washed out from the Spring's rains so wasn't able to follow it all the way up past Smith Saddle. I climbed Burro Peak yesterday and then decided to do Rattlesnake again today, but using the normal trail. However I hadn't planned on doing it so I didn't check for the exact location or download a GPS track or map. I thought it started at the little stream after the 1st tunnel so went there. There were a number of footprints and they seemed to be going up the hill but no trail and they disappeared in a tangle of brush and poison oak. I gave up and went past the 2nd tunnel and nothing there either except a steep, poor trail going up the ridge near where I went the first time. I gave up and was returning to my camper when I noticed what looked like an old road up above the current one before the 1st tunnel so was looking at that when I noticed a use trail going up that way. I headed up that and it turned out to be the trail I was looking for! I haven't been able to do any hiking for the last 3 weeks while recovering from a stress fracture so was a bit out of shape but finally made it up the seemingly never ending ridge to the top. A much preferred route compared to the one I took the first time!
