Ascent Trip ReportThe hike is short, and the biggest challenge is actually getting to the trailhead. Granted, I hiked this early season 24 hours after a rain storm in a wet year, so my experience was probably a bit different than what you'd see in the summer. Kings Peak Rd is the standard access route, and it's about 17 mi on this well maintained dirt road to the Lightning trailhead. The road was fantastic for about the first 6 miles until the southern junction with Saddle Mountain Rd. Almost immediately after the junction I encountered the first obstacle, a landslide that brought down a tree with it that occluded most of the road. I didn't need to pull out my chainsaw, but I did have to get out and do some road work to squeeze by. The following 3 miles until the junction with Kings Range Road that connects to Wilder Ridge Rd were the only miles that required any caution. There are 5 or 6 streams that cut across the road. With clearance the crossings were easy, but a low clearance vehicle could scrape bottom. The final miles were easy except for a point where a large rock has landed in middle of the road. I imagine that during the summer after seasonal maintenance it's pretty easy to make it all the way.
The hike itself is quite short, but the views are stunning. I enjoyed having the mountain all to myself and feeling quite remote. |
