Ascent Trip ReportWith Ava, Sue and Mark. Sean in meetings all weekend...
Weather forecast was dismal but we totally threaded the needle. Pouring on the drive in but somehow down to drizzle to Jill when we started. Borrowed Sur’s hyperlite pack to try out. Packed at the TH plus one large water jug and 2 liters. Definitely narrow which gives much maneuverability for climbing. Not in love with not having a brain for easy access (gloves etc) and the roll/unroll is annoying for stashing layers removed. Could figure something out for that. Felt great the whole way... now to try and pack it as for my goal trip (NE Buttress of Goode). Not sure it will all fit....
Only drizzled a small amount, wind was strong at times and as we just started up the little Si trail and at the slabby Rock a big tree branch or part fell off and slammed into the ground right behind us....closest I’ve been to that...a bit scary but we figured we were ok for continuing. Only had some tiny hail when nearing the top. Sue had been ahead and once I arrived she headed down. I dumped my water while Mark headed to the benches. I waited and we headed down together. Hail had stopped and the sun came out....definitely not what we were expecting.
On the way home the rain started, stopped then came down in torrential east coast thunderstorm style. We all slowed to a near crawl on the highway with the super hi-speeds on. Then kind of sunny back in Seattle.
