Ascent Trip ReportThis is kind of silly to post (we didn't even attempt the peak except to try to drive to the trailhead) but I want to document the driving route. After doing Granite (see report) we drove on a mostly excellent dirt road to the Palen Mtn turnoff. See Dean Gaudet's report on the road--we found it to accurately describe the terrible condition of the road. In our lifted F-350, we got stopped at about 5 mi by overgrown brush, so we camped a 100 yards or so back from the road junction (there is a sign that says the road to the right goes 0.3mi, but the route to the trailhead is straight). Gusty wind started at 3:30am and got worse. We decided to do the peak another time. After sunrise, I walked up the road and "fixed" the overgrown areas of the road (both sides and the middle), and also removed some rocks, from there to where the road goes steeply into a wash (what the DPS guide terms as 4WD, but the whole road is pretty much 4WD now). I wouldn't attempt driving past that point. There are camping areas here and also further back on the road. It's not a very long walk if you find a better campsite a little further back. We will return to do both Palen and Big Maria, but it's starting to get hot so this may happen in the fall.
