Ascent Trip Report This was a private hike with George Christiansen, Pat Arredondo and Laura Newman. These three peaks are west of Barstow and north of Hinkley in the Mojave Desert. We drove to Barstow, west on Rt. 58 turned north on Hinkley Rd. drove through Hinkley (don’t drink the water), eventually getting on the Opal Mtn. road. The road is ok for high clearance vehicles, but slow going due to the ruts. We drove to the start of Bob Burd’s track then continued up the ridge road for about a ¼ mile is George’s very capable 4WD vehicle. From there it was a short walk to the summit.
Next was Black. We continued on the Opal mountain road. It does a long loop over to Black Canyon road. We took a short cut on a 4WD road. It saved us some distance, but I’m not sure if it saved any time. It was a rough road. Once to the trail head, we followed Bob Burd’s track up to a ridge, then over to Black. Returned the same way. There was a register and a BM on Black.
Next was Grass Valley. We went back on Black Canyon to a point where a fence line stopped us. We made a sharp left and drove to 1777 road, turned right and drove to the starting point for Bob Burd’s track. This was probably the toughest hike of the day. It was only 2 miles round trip and 900’ gain. The last 300’ of gain was over 2/10 mile up some rocky, slippery terrain. Going down was just as bad. There was a register on the summit.
