Ascent Trip Report


The classic counter-clockwise loop, Caher-West, Caher, Carrauntoohil, The Bones, Beenkeragh, Stumpa Barr na hAbhann, Skregmore, Cnoc lochtair from the Hydro Track carpark on the west side.

I drove over from my hotel in Muckross. It took about 40 mins. The roads are fine (paved), just a little narrow (typical Ireland roads).

The route begins up a paved road from the parking lot. You will hike right through a few sheep herds. Do not bring a dog with you (there are signs and other people warned about it too) - respect the landowners. After passing the hydro dam, you come to a flat boggy area where the trail is less obvious. I put on my microspikes and started picking my way across the "high" grass. Things were going well - till they weren't. Just you when feel like you are a peat bog master - you will step on something that you expect will be solid and you will sink up to your knee. Be prepared. I think everything has to do it once - it's the cost of doing this hike. Just be prepared to smell like a peat bog for the rest of the hike. After you cross the peat bog and start ascending up, you can look back down and see the different routes people have taken and theorize on which one would have been the best - but I think every option has one spot that people sink in.

I had an overcast day with light rain. When I reached the first "peak" (Caher-west), the cloud bank on the other side was so thick, I couldn't see more than 5 feet of trail ahead of me. I had no idea how to descent the other side of the peak. And, I had no idea there was 2,000+ foot cliff about 4' to my left. I stood on the summit for ~30 seconds trying to way my options and figure out what I was going to do. ANd just like that - TADAH, the clouds lifted, the view opened up and I could see the trail all the way to Caher, and I could see 2,000+ feet down to the lake below. Woooo.

I made my way over Caher and then to Carrountoohil. There were a few patches of snow on the ground which I wasn't expecting. But I still had my microspikes on, although I probably didn't need them. It was just under 4 miles, and 2 hrs from the beginning to the summit of Carrountoohil.

I continued counter-clockwise over the "The Bones" which gets a little tricky in places. Take your time and it's fine. Once you pass The Bones, it becomes very easy up and down over the remaining peaks. Shortly after passing the last peak, Cnoc lochtair, I turned right off the trail and started descending down toward the road below though the open field. You can easily see the road and easily pick your route down (there is no trail here - just sheep pasture). Note - when you get to the low point, you'll need to find a gate to get through the fence, so look for the gate on your descent and head for it.

I finished the 7.5-mile loop in 3:40 with ~3600' of total elevation gain.
