Ascent Trip ReportThis highpoint has been on my bucket list for many years. It was the last named county highpoint I had left to do in Missouri. I live on the other side of the state; however, and I was not optimistic about summit success since there is a large hunting lodge on the southern slopes of the mound. In addition, I have tried to contact an official for the hunting club there without success. My phone calls were never returned, even when I left a message with a secretary. I was on a return trip from climbing in South Carolina and I had enough time before sunset, so I thought I would drive north from I-70 and checkout possible access firsthand. To my surprise I found a dirt that was not posted on the west side of Buffalo Knob located at 39.27616 N 91.05495 W. A former trip report mentioned this road was gated. I followed this road and passed a gun range on the left and more than one deer stand, so it was a good thing it wasn't hunting season. When I was at the top of a hill in the road just .2 mile from the summit, I parked and made a quick dash up the west slope of Buffalo Knob to the top. There were no visible houses here and the road did not appear to support a lot of traffic because it was very soft in spots. I reached the summit in 4 minutes with the highest point very near a tall deer stand in a cleared field next to a tree. This spot did not have the same coordinates as provided on Peakbagger, but it looked like the highest point to me. Its coordinates were 39.28218 N 91.05750 W. I did not feel comfortable here, even though it was not hunting season and I could see more deer stands in the distance. In addition, I counted nearly 10 deer roaming free, so the hunting club must have game feeding stations and/or salt licks. I returned to my car in 4 minutes after covering .45 mile roundtrip. I was glad to get out of there without getting anyone upset. This is definitely a summit you should never attempt during any hunting season. The hunting club may be agreeable to let you climb out of season, but I never had any luck making contact for permission.
