Ascent Trip ReportAfter Dark Mountain, I had to head back to Archdale to shower and meet my sister, so I decided to take a crack at Shepherd Mountain even though it was a weekend and the office was probably closed. I called the number that is in previous trip reports, but got voicemail. I did not leave a message and just made my way up to the office of the retreat. Google maps will get you there from anywhere. Upon reaching the office, I found that in the adjacent activity center, a couple of people were eating breakfast. I knocked on the door and soon was talking to Juanita, who readily granted me permission to hike up to the top. She asked me to leave my name and cell phone, for safety purposes. She also gave me her name and cell phone so I could text her once I was off the mountain. Being pressed for time I hustled up to the top of the mountain via the white blazed tower trail. On the way up (and on the way down) I made a wrong turn, but found my way up pretty easily.
As other reports have noted, leaf litter can make traction a little bit of an issue but I didn't have too much trouble. Upon reaching the summit area, I circled the fenced radio towers, and then walked over to the impressive observation tower. The gate was unlocked and open and I climbed the over 100 steep steps up to the top, where I was treated to great views of the surrounding countryside. I then made my way back down to the bottom and cross country to where I found the trail and, despite another minor unplanned detour, was back at my car in under an hour. Great hike, nice people, successful morning.
