Ascent Trip ReportAs far as I can determine Whiteoak Mountain is the 7th highest named highpoint in South Carolina. I climbed this mountain from Sassafras Mountain, but of course, this meant I had to begin my hike by descending about 700 feet from the Sassafras Mountain parking area to the valley between the two mountains. The trailhead is directly across from the parking area at a sign for the Foothills Trail. From here Whiteoak Mountain is 1.23 air miles away. At the valley floor I was .52 air miles from the summit and I had hiked .91 mile to get to this point. It was a steep climb out of the valley and after 13 minutes I reached a trail to the left of the road I was on at 35.06762 N 82.76050 W after covering a total of 1.13 miles. From here I was now just .31 air miles from the summit. Although there was a sign here directing hikers to take the trail to the left, I was worried the Foothills Trail might bypass the summit of Whiteoak Mountain, so I stayed on the road and reached its summit after covering a total of 1.48 miles where I found a benchmark that read,"Lake Toxawa - 1934/2000," which I thought was a little strange on the summit of the 7th highest named highpoint in South Carolina. There was a metal stake in the ground a little over 10 feet away from the benchmark. Just 100 yards before I reached the summit I passed by a trail to the left of the road, which I assumed was the end of trail I passed by earlier, so I decided to descend this way and I did reached the same place where this trail started after covering .38 mile in 13 minutes. I had to climb back up to the parking lot at Sassafras Mountain and I got there after covering 1.45 miles in 56 minutes from the summit of Whiteoak Mountain. |
