Ascent Trip ReportI like to grab some additional gain when training and explore sub peaks when they are near trails. There is a subpeak near the summit of Atalaya that someone has entered into the database to get extra credit but the prominence of this small nub is well under 100 feet so instead on the way down, I had been eyeing this other lower subpeak that also has a USGS BM on the top giving it a clean elevation of point 8192. This point was not in the database and was a bit further off trail and sports 100 foot prominence minimum so I preferred this for extra credit. And, unlike the other subpeak at the higher elevation, this subpeak is frequently hiked. I know this because it had a very well developed social trail (use trail) to the summit and a cairn and in fact, it appeared that folks hike beyond this peak and down the other side. I did not follow it beyond the summit. Since it is a well used destination along the main trail with a un-maintained but well used social trail, and has 100 feet of rise, heck..........extra credit when training for me and Willie. Decent views off the side of the summit too. |
