Ascent Trip Report

Focal point of 6 day hike, summitted after 1.5 days, 10 hr summit day with some scrambling.

After Bwahit. From Abiko village 3130m. Abiko is a noisy place at night! Dogs howling and babies crying until after midnight. Then a drumming and chanting wedding party moving around the neighbourhood until after 0200. At last a couple hours sleep before our 0500 breakfast.

Departed 6, initially by torch, good trail, a few turns and shortcuts, rough road passing numerous giant lobelias coming into flower, bright morning sun, at pass taking trail L leading to E peak, some YDS3 scrambling higher up on good rock. 5 hrs up. East summit (GPS N13.23692° E38.37264°, 4537m) has small concrete block inscribed with Ras Dejen 4543, we're told there was an Austrian team up there for two days so this is presumably the accurate height by differential GPS, consistent with our GPS readings. Careful hand level and abney sightings indicate W summit (GPS N13.23643° E38.36831°) is 1m lower. Far east summit much lower, by maybe 20m. We're joined by a couple of young lads who help with route finding (and eventually on descent sell us a few drinks).

We descend a little and cross to W summit, more YDS3 en route, a few rocks at highpoint, sighting back confirms 1m lower than east summit. Descend about 1230, some easy scrambling on SW ridge, a few stops, 30mins steady rain early pm (probably normal here), finishing in hot sun, 4hr descent, these timings fairly typical for small experienced party, large parties can take 12h we're told.

Relax at tranquil campsite until dinner in anticipation of another noisy night. But an excellent day, also completing my set of the six world 50 finest peaks which are located in Africa: Dashen is Africa's second most prominent after Kilimanjaro. Tomorrow we move camp ready to climb our final Ethiopian summit Silki the following day.
