Ascent Trip Report

After Inatye. Overnight Chennek camp 3626m, nice starry sky, slight grass frost. Breakfast porridge bread honey, Inatye cliffs superb in morning sun. Hike 0815, immediately detour L off road quite busy with trucks and mules, very different from last week's 4 obscure ultras. Clifftop lookout with lower peaks to W very good in morning light. We cross to R of road, quiet trail beside stream. Cross to L of road, follow rim, great views. Road again then trail L to Bwahit, German party descend past us. Summit 1100 (GPS N13.24459° E38.21818°, 4424m, outcrop 2m SW of tall cairn); summit to S is lower by maybe 20-30m, Silki to NE slightly lower although map on Simien NP HQ wall has it higher at 4453m (typo for 4435?) and named Kidis Yared. Meles our guide believes Bwahit is 2nd highest in Ethiopia. Tall cairn; couple of outcrops 2m to S slightly higher.

Descend to road, cross it and descend on good trail crossing steep slope, lunch then down thru terraces to surprisingly large village Chiro Leba where we stop for cola, thunderstorm across valley towards Ras Dashen, we catch the edge of it, waterproofs on briefly. Continue down thru streets and past school compound then continue down on good trail zigzagging to eventually cross shallow river on stepping stones. Warm 300m ascent in afternoon sun, trailside bushes with sorrel like fruits are Rumex nervosus.

Ambiko village, 3130m, arrive 1645, 8h30 including breaks. Camp in flattish area at edge of village, mules here ahead of us with tents up and cooking tent soon up and tea and coffee much needed! Dinner 7pm.
