Ascent Trip Reporti think our main contribution here is to suggest josef nuernberger's route after you reach the saddle west of 5796. we weren't paying attention to the tracks, and we started up the ridge going west before we realised that the trail had gone some 200' downhill to sidehill SW. going straight up the ridge requires some route-finding, and some scrambling. keith went a separate way from greg and me, but we all met up again later up the ridge, so there are at least two routes which go.
on the way back we decided we'd try the "trail", following one of various other tracks... we were disappointed. this "trail" along this segment is worse than anywhere else, and you end up having to climb an additional 300'+ and going extra distance just to rejoin at the saddle near 5796 again. in retrospect we all agreed that our earlier direct route was preferred for this section.
attached track highlights the difference between the two routes. it has a mistake around 4700' where we lost the trail on the ascent (approaching the first ridge), but on descent it was easy to stick on the trail.
numerous times, high up on the mountain, i wish i had brought clippers, loppers, and a hand saw to clear brush from the trail. i also regretted not wearing knee high gaiters to provide armour against a particularly nasty plants which i think are called "shin dagger". they look so innocent, but they stab your shins, and you frequently can't avoid them.
