Ascent Trip Report

Very, very windy cold day. Hiked from Chapel Pond trailhead up the Ridge Trail to Giant. Slow going, as the Giant trail was lumpy and bumpy frozen postholes just about the entire way. Some as deep as 3 feet or so. Step off trail and snow was about 5 foot or more deep. Had to watch every step. And areas of really tricky ice. Hit the summit then down to the Rocky Ridge Peak junction. It was packed snow but not the lumpy bumpy conditions. Used a combo of Hillsounds/Kahtoolas, crampons and snowshoes (on RPR to give feet a rest). Blue skies and sun. Spectacular views. Saw a group of 5 swiftly and impressively moving along; they were ranger students (trail register said there were 11). Some campers by the Washbowl. Took 9 1/2 hours moving moderately but steadily due to the trail conditions. Plus the constant elevation was pretty exhausting.
